TriPeaks Solitaire: The Fast-Paced Combo Chaser
By Martin Petroff
If you enjoy the overlapping visual style of Pyramid but prefer lightning-fast, chain-reaction gameplay over doing math in your head, TriPeaks Solitaire is exactly what you are looking for. Originally created in 1989, this variation has become massively popular in the modern mobile gaming era because it is incredibly fast, visually satisfying, and highly addictive. It blends the structural layout of Pyramid with the sequential, suit-ignoring mechanics of Golf Solitaire. Your goal isn't to build perfect alternating columns, but to clear the board by stringing together massive, rapid-fire combos.
How to Play
TriPeaks is incredibly easy to learn, making it perfect for quick, casual sessions. Here is how to set up the iconic three mountains and start your combo chain.
The Objective: Your goal is to clear all the cards that make up the three overlapping "peaks" by moving them to a single Waste pile.
The Setup (The Three Peaks):
Shuffle a standard 52-card deck.
Deal cards face down to form three separate peaks (pyramids) that share a massive bottom row.
Row 1 (Top): 3 cards separated from each other (the tips of the three peaks).
Row 2: 6 cards (2 overlapping the bottom of each top card).
Row 3: 9 cards (3 overlapping the bottom of each Row 2 pair).
Row 4 (Bottom): 10 cards dealt face up in a single, continuous line overlapping the bottom of Row 3.
This setup uses 28 cards. The remaining 24 cards form your face-down Stockpile at the bottom of the board.
How to Play:
The Starting Move: Flip the top card of your Stockpile face up to start your Waste pile.
Building the Chain: You can move any fully exposed card from the peaks onto the Waste pile if it is exactly one rank higher or one rank lower than the top card of the Waste pile, completely ignoring the suit or color. (For example, if the Waste pile shows a 7, you can play a 6 or an 8 of any suit).
The Wrap-Around Rule: In TriPeaks, the ranks wrap around continuously. This means you can play a King onto an Ace, and an Ace onto a King, allowing you to keep your chain reactions going.
Uncovering Cards: When you remove cards from the bottom row, any face-down cards in the row above that become completely uncovered are immediately flipped face up and become available to play.
The Draw: When you cannot find any playable cards on the peaks that are one rank higher or lower than your Waste pile, draw one card from your Stockpile and place it face up on the Waste pile to create a new target number.
Winning: You win the game when you successfully dismantle all three peaks. You lose if your Stockpile runs out and you have no more valid moves on the board.
